Castello di Ama
Since 1976 · conventional
The founding of Castello di Ama goes back to the year 1976, when four families originally from Rome set out to restore a prestigious estate to its rightful splendour. The estate, originally 55 hectares in size and located in the heart of Chianti Classico, was immediately enhanced through extensive investment in the vineyard, employing the most modern agronomic techniques of the time. In addition, a new cellar was built with steel tanks, temperature control and generous working spaces.
The vineyards of Castello di Ama lie in the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti, in the additional geographical unit (u.g.a.) of the same name within Chianti Classico, at an altitude between 430 and 520 metres above sea level. Throughout its history the estate has always chosen to own and invest in vineyards in the immediate vicinity of the cellar, in order to harvest grapes of the best possible quality and in the best possible state of health.
Over the years, with growing experience and advancing scientific knowledge, Castello di Ama has replanted almost its entire area, finding the best standard in vineyards of medium density (5500 vines/ha). In doing so it applied state-of-the-art clonal selection of Sangiovese and other complementary varieties and altered the orography through terracing in order to achieve optimal sites.
