Torre d'Orti

Not far from Verona, to the north-east, lies the little village of Marcellise. Here, in the heart of the Valpolicella region, the two brothers Franco and Luciano Piona run the Torre d'Orti estate. The Piona brothers' estates also include Cavalchina (Custoza & Bardolino), Prendina (southern Lake Garda) and Llac (Lugana). While Franco takes care of the commercial side, Luciano bears responsibility for the viticulture and the cellar. We have already mentioned elsewhere that we consider Luciano one of the best oenologists in northern Italy… Here at Torre d'Orti, the "Tower of Orti", red wines are made that are not only typical of this site but, in our opinion, rank among the finest and most attractively priced examples of Valpolicella wines. Alongside the typical varieties Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella, the relatively little-known but tradition-rich variety Oseleta is also grown here.
